Christmas with the Gaskell’s
By Anthony Burton & Diane Duffy
Publisher: The Gaskell Society
In Victorian England the celebration of Christmas surged. Elizabeth Gaskell wrote several heart warming stories, depicting the festive season. Although, she was not comfortable in doing so, for “I could not write about virtues to order”. She, like everyone else, did participate in the merriment that went on. This publication gathers together everything we have found out about her experience of Christmas observances: carols, turkeys, Christmas trees, and family parties.
The authors of this publication are members of The Committee of the Gaskell Society and volunteer at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House.
