Woodcuts, wood engravings and later linocuts have been used alongside type to illustrate text since the invention of the printing press with many early examples on show at Innerpeffray Library. In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn the basic techniques of relief printing, including cutting and printing your own “block” to create a selection of prints, cards and bookmarks.
All materials supplied. All you have to bring is a simple sketch, lots of enthusiasm and be prepared to go home with inky fingers! Participants should also bring their own lunch. Refreshments of teas, coffees and soft drinks are available at the Library, but there are no food serving facilities nearby.
Based in Highland Perthshire, Linda Farquharson creates linocut prints inspired by flowers, birds, animals and the female form. A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, she specialises in relief printing, linocut and wood engraving, and has exhibited her prints throughout the UK.
Innerpeffray is the home of Scotland’s first free, public lending library, established in 1680 by David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madertie. His idea that people could take the books home to read them was a radical one at the time, and he wanted his library to be here “for time coming”; a vision we stand by today. The Library is a fascinating door into the past where you can explore the stories of the people who borrowed books and visited the Library. We offer guided tours and a chance to handle the books for yourself. The site at Innerpeffray also includes the medieval chapel of St Mary (in the care of Historic Environment Scotland) and the Victorian schoolroom where visitors can find refreshments with a self-serve tea & coffee machine. Situated in rural Perthshire, the grounds of the Library also offer a pleasant riverside walk.
