Nor Iron Bars – Lancashire Artists In Captivity 1942 – 1945

By Stephen Bull

The 2nd Battalion of the Loyals, ordered to surrender at Singapore, were among the many thousands of Allied prisoners who fell into the hands of the Japanese.

The story of the POWs is one of resilience and creativity in adversity.  Among the many Lancashire men captured were a surprising number of gifted artists, who set out to prove that ‘walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.’

Using many examples of their work,  Dr Stephen Bull shows how they created a permanent record of daily life in the camps, revealing just how resourceful and indomitable the human spirit can be.
