THE NEW WIPERS TIMES, WORLD WAR ONE CENTENARY EDITION

A very interesting book published by Nottingham City Museums & Galleries on the occasion of the exhibition, at Nottingham Castle, of –

“Trent to Trenches: The People of Nottinghamshire and the Great War, 1914-18″

The New Wipers Times began life during a discussion about ways in which Nottingham City Museums & Galleries could commemorate the Centenary of the outbreak of World War One.
Their main contribution was “Trent to Trenches”, a major exhibition at Nottingham Castles in the summer of 2014. This explored the experiences of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire people during World War One, at home and on the front line, through powerful photographs, letters, diaries and artefacts, including paintings and prints created by official war artists during the conflict. They also wanted to introduce a contemporary perspective to the book by including work by modern artists and by making sure the exhibition reflected the reality of life in the army today, and the lives of their families, one hundred years on.
The original Wipers Times was a renowned trench magazine, published by Nottingham’s Sherwood Foresters whilst fighting on the frontlines during WW1. In early 1916 the 12th Battalion came across an abandoned printing press and used it to begin a publication that consisted of poems, reflections, in-jokes and lampoons of the military situation.
The graphic anthology that followed included a selection of factual and fictional stories created by adults and children who took part in the project, along with spoof adverts that took inspiration from the original “Wipers Times”.
This centenary edition provides 60 fascinating pages of poignant commentary & humour, spoof ads and inspirational illustrations.
