Charlotte Brontë is a giant of Victorian literature and the much-loved author of the classic Jane Eyre, but what of her last novel to be published during her lifetime, Villette, about the passion and pain of unrequited love?
Brontë’s semi-autobiographical book Villette tells the story of Lucy Snowe as she flees England for a Belgian boarding school. Her tale of heartache and adversity contrasts with that of Ruth, a novel about an unmarried mother written by Charlotte’s friend Elizabeth Gaskell.
Ruth shocked contemporary readers and exposed the hypocrisy of Victorian sexual double-standards. It has been recognised as the first novel to make a ‘fallen woman’ the heroine and caused huge controversy for its author. This special partnership event explored the historical reality behind these two iconic women writers and the sexual status of women in Victorian life.
With speakers Andrew Stodolny (Learning Officer at Brontë Parsonage Museum), Dr Emma Liggins (Co-Director of Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University), and Dr Debbie Challis (Creative Producer at The Portico).

Shipping will be made to the address supplied by you on the completed order form. We can only ship to the United kingdom.
We will endeavour to deliver to within seven (7) Working Days (i.e. Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and UK public holidays) after you place your order;
Any delivery dates provided by us will be estimates only and you will not be entitled to refuse to accept late delivery or treat late delivery as a breach of contract by us.
Please Note: Due to the changes in legislation on the back of the UK leaving the EU. Customers ordering from the EU are now liable to pay any customs or VAT charges and a handling fee before the parcel can be collected. The price of this does depend on the country and value of the parcel.
We will not deliver to a post office box (PO Box) address. We also reserve the right not to deliver to a communal post office address.
The address supplied by you must have a valid postcode. If no-one is at the address when delivery is attempted the goods may be retained by the driver, in which case the driver will leave notification of attempted delivery. If we have to return to deliver the goods on a separate occasion a further delivery charge may become payable. All goods will usually be delivered by Royal Mail. However, on occasion we may use a different provider to get the best value.
Refund policy
Refunds accepted within 14 days but buyer is responsible for return postage cost. We will only refund to the card used for the original postage.
