Description
Our brand new, up-to-date Elizabeth Gaskell’s House Guidebook.
Elizabeth Gaskell’s House is at 84 Plymouth Grove in Manchester, and was home to Elizabeth Gaskell, one of Manchester’s most important writers. Elizabeth lived at the House from 1850 until her death in 1865, with her family continuing to live there till 1913.
Over the years the House had fallen into quite a bad state and was eventually rescued by the Manchester Historic Buildings Trust, who still own it today. After a long period of restoration, the House was opened to the public as a museum and historic house in 2014.
Our aim is to celebrate the life and literature of Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a radical figure whose novels explored themes that still resonate today, such as workers’ rights, poverty, and the position of women in society.
The Elizabeth Gaskell’s House Guidebook covers the history of each room in the House, as well as the Garden. Each section focuses in on on key objects in every room, including some personal items that belonged to the Gaskell family.
There is also a timeline of key events in the history of 84 Plymouth Grove, from the year the Gaskell family moved in to the present day.
