Join Elaine Thomson, author of the hugely popular ‘Jem Flockhart’ series of historic crime novels and a new quartet of supernatural stories set in Scotland, for an afternoon of creative writing. Participants can look forward to expert guidance and inspiration from Thomson, who holds a PhD in the history of 19th century medicine. She describes herself as being “alarmingly knowledgeable about poisonous plants and mushrooms” and this workshop will share this knowledge, and ideas on how to apply it creatively.
The workshop will also feature a short tour of the ‘poisons of Innerpeffray’ – an exploration of the topic both as found in the Library’s collections and also growing in the grounds.
Innerpeffray is the home of Scotland’s first free, public lending library, established in 1680 by David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madertie. His idea that people could take the books home to read them was a radical one at the time, and he wanted his library to be here “for time coming”; a vision we stand by today. The Library is a fascinating door into the past where you can explore the stories of the people who borrowed books and visited the Library. We offer guided tours and a chance to handle the books for yourself. The site at Innerpeffray also includes the medieval chapel of St Mary (in the care of Historic Environment Scotland) and the Victorian schoolroom where visitors can find refreshments with a self-serve tea & coffee machine. Situated in rural Perthshire, the grounds of the Library also offer a pleasant riverside walk.
