Description

The Grey Woman by Elizabeth Gaskell tells a powerful story of deception and mistrust. This complex tale is told from the perspective of the protagonist, Anna Scherer, forced  into marriage with an aristocrat who takes her from her family to his isolated chateau in the French mountains. Once there, she begins to discover his dark and dangerous secrets. With the help of her maid, she plans her escape.

Much like her other work, The Grey Woman explores the theme of oppression of women in marriage, specially the lack of power and rights women had. This story was considered ahead of its time with its progressive feminist views and strong female protagonist.
